Frequently Asked Questions

What education does an acupuncturist receive?

Today, acupuncturists undertake four to six years of extensive training and comprehensive graduate training at nationally certified schools.  To practice, all acupuncturists must pass a national exam and meet their state’s specific guidelines.

What does acupuncture feel like?
You may feel a small prick with each needle that’s less painful than a mosquito bite. Most people do not feel the acupuncture needle being inserted. When the needle connects with the energy, or Qi, of the acupuncture point, it is normal to feel a mild tingling, warmness, numb sensation, or slight dull ache. Many people find acupuncture deeply relaxing and often feel very calm after a treatment. You might feel a little tired, but this passes quickly.
Is acupuncture safe?

Yes. “The risks of acupuncture are low if you have a competent, certified acupuncture practitioner using sterile needles. Common side effects include soreness and minor bleeding or bruising where the needles were inserted. Single-use, disposable needles are now the practice standard, so the risk of infection is minimal.” – Mayo Clinic

Is my personal information safe?

Yes. Acupuncturists are bound by a Code of Ethics and are HIPAA compliant.  You should feel safe to share personal health information with your acupuncturist so she can come up with the correct diagnosis for your condition.

How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions required to address initial health complaints varies from one individual to the next according to one’s diagnosis, the general state of their well-being, their lifestyle and their major goals. Typically, longer-standing conditions take longer to treat. Some change is usually felt within the first several treatments and improves as the course of treatment progresses. However occasionally symptoms may disappear within the first couple of visits. Every individual is unique, and so is everyone’s response to treatment.
Can I use acupuncture if I am also receiving conventional medical care?
Acupuncture is considered as a complementary therapy and can be undertaken with treatments from most other health disciplines and most medications. It integrates well with conventional medicine. However, if you are already receiving treatment through your doctor then it makes sense to tell her or him that you are having acupuncture.
